2025 Southeastern Duals Recap

The Southeastern Duals had four teams mentioned in this years Pre-season rankings review. Thompson HS, our pre-transfer number 3 in 7A, Hewitt-Trussvile (HT) our pre-season number 4 in 7A, Enterprise, who was knocking on the door in 7A and McAdory, who was knocking on the door in 6A. Auburn and Daphne were both in our Need a little help group for 7A. A couple Georgia schools also showed up for the dual, Carrollton and Central (Carrollton), but neither would factor into the Championship conversation..

With it being early season, there were a lot of holes in many of the duals, but we still wanted to recap the outcome and some significant early season matchups.

Dual Results

Thompsons top team, Thompson (Black) defeated Auburn 51-21, Daphne 64-12 and McAdory 51-30. They also added a 70-0 win over Carrolton.

Daphne beat McAdory 45-30 and and Auburn beat both Daphne and McAdory, 40-35 and 42-41.

Enterprise had a couple close duals, losing to Central (Carrollton) GA 38-40, and beating Hoover on criteria 39-39. They also beat Thompson Red 38-33 and Russell County 59-16

HT went 5-0 in their pool beating Central (Carrollton) GA 49-25, Enterprise 44-27, Hoover 69-9, Thompson Red 45-29 and Russell County 78-6.

In the end 7A pre-season number 3 Thompson, met pre-season number 4 Hewitt-Trussvile. HT ended up winning the dual, and the Championship, with a score of 41-38. It is important to know Thompson forfeited 113 and 126 and HT forfeited 106.

Highlight Match-ups

Most of these wrestlers will be ranked once our first composite rankings drop on 11/26, but we saw some surprisingly lopsided matchups indicating there will be a significant drop-off from 1-6 in some of these groups.

In a 150 lb match-up, Auburn’s Lewis Miller, who Qualified last year at 138, took down last year’s 4th place finisher (144), Turner Hutson, 8-3 for a great start to his year.

Braylen Johnson your 7A 106 lb Champion last year etched Daphne’s 106 Qualifier Jackson Mcgivney 17-2. Mcgivney then went up a weight to 126 and gave Mcadory’s Marion Wilkerson-sanders all he could handle in a 7-10 SV loss.

Your 5th (Brady Walsh, Thompson) and 6th (Micah Swiger, Daphne) place finishers from last year’s 7A 113 division would meet at 132. Walsh wrestled above his certified weight of 126, but still captured a tech fall over Swiger 22-6.

Will Atkinson (Thompson 7A 126 5th) and Braylon Hill (138 6A Qualifier) met at 144 ending in a TF for Atkinson, 15-0.

At 138, a battle between two third place finishers had a surprising outcome with Brody Logan (Thompson 7A 120 3rd) pinning Rivers Harbison (HT 7A 106 3rd) in just 24 seconds.

Up at 190 we got to see two State Place finishers square off with Gavin Whiteside (Enterprise 7A 190 2nd) getting a good early season win over Braxton Reaves (Hewitt-Trussville 7A 190 4th) 17-3.

Highlight Match-ups

This was a great tournament with a big group of returning placers and qualifiers and several weight classes seeing multiple state placers meet in the finals.

Two 106 Qualifiers, Elijah Delong (Prattville) and Victor Pantaleon (Carver Montgomery HS) looked like the favorite to win the 106 lb bracket, but Freshmen Kolby Smith (Wetumpka) had other plans, teching Delong in the semis and following that up with a pin of Pantaleon in the finals.

Two State placers, Parker Van noy (Beauregard HS, 5A 106 Champion) and Barrett Adams (Wetumpka, 7A 106 Fifth), looked like they were on a collision course for the final at 120, and they did just that. Van noy delivered an 8-1 victory to take home the championship.

There were 3 113 lb qualifiers from last year at 126, with two of them, both 6A representatives, ending up squaring off in the finals, Liam Mckinney (Wetumpka) and Caleb Hovey (Pell City). This one ended with a lopsided result as Hovey pinned McKinney at the 3:54 mark. Hudson Mann (Holtville) ended up getting pinned by Nathan Poe (Moody HS) twice and finishing fourth.

132 saw two more state placers in a bracket together, Karson Poe (Moody Hs, 5A 126 2nd) and Phoenix Ayers (Central, 7A 113 4th). Once again, they would both advance to the finals with the returning runner-up winning 10-2.

Justin Harbin, Brookwood Jr-Sr’s 132 runner-up from last year was the only returning state attendee at 138. Harbin delivered a dominant performance winning the bracket with 2 pins and a 13-2 MD in the finals.

Brody Edwards (Beauregard HS, 5A 138 3rd) and Troy Watson (Wetumpka, 6A 138 Qualifier) met in the 144 final, with the qualifier turning the tables from last year and upsetting the third place finisher via pin at the 1:42 mark of the first period.

150 had 3 returning state placers, with Drake Wood (Reeltown 1A-4A 132 2nd) and also #4 on out Sophomore 10 list, beating both of the others, Noah Davis, (Brookwood Jr-Sr, 6A 144 3rd) and #18 on our Senior 33 going down via TF in the Semis and Elijah Wilson (Pell City, 6A 138 5th) via TF in the Finals. Davis would go on to finish third.

157 had a first, second and third place finisher, Reese Thorn (Beauregard HS, 5A 150 Champion), Dylan Farris (Holtville, 5A 144 2nd) and Carter Everett (Moody Hs, 5A 144 3rd). With all that returning firepower, the story ended up being about Cash Gurley (Pell City) who pinned Everett in the semis and unfortunately had to accept an MF from Thorn in the finals. We hope Thorn is alright and will be back on the mat soon. Everett ended up MF in his next match as well and Farris surprisingly went 0-2 to start his season.

Talan Mcnutt, Pell City’s returning 6A 150 Qualifier won the 165 lb division in dominant fashion, TF, F, TF, F, taking out Peter (Lawson) Kalisky (Prattvillem 7A 157 Qualifier) on his way to the finals. Kalisky finished third. Holtville had another disappointing 2 and out from their returning 5A 165 Qualifier Teagan Dunnigan. I would expect these guys to get going as the season progresses.

175 saw what will be a 6A ranked matchup (Rankings drop 11/26) between Drake Pabst (Pell City, 6A 157 3rd) and Tyler (jax) Cooper (Brookwood Jr-Sr, 6A 165 4th). Cooper racked up the points with 5 takedowns on his way to a 15-6 MD.

190 saw Garrett Hartley (Prattville, 7A 175 Qualifier) defeat James Mcdonald (Moody Hs, 5A 175 4th) by MD. Hartley win on to win via pin in the final. Mcdonald finished third.
