Breakdown By the Numbers
Our last boys division to look at is 1A-4A. This division has the highest number of returners with 110. This means we have 66% of all qualifiers returning. With only 58 graduates in this group, it will be the second most difficult group to crack into state for the first time, after 5A.
Of those 110 returning State Qualifiers, 7 of them are Champions. In addition, there are 8 returning State Runner-ups, 10 Third place finishers, 10 Fourth, 9 Fifths and 7 Sixth. Overall, there are 51 of a possible 84 State placers returning this year. At 60% of placers returning, this group is the second difficult to crack the podium or the first time, again behind 5A. These two groups overall were the youngest groups at the 2025 State Championship tournament.
49 of 110 Qualifiers come from the 106-132 weights. Middleweight numbers drop a little in this group, down to 35 returners coming from 138-175 weight classes and the big boys jump up, with 26 coming from 175-285.
106 keeps the streak going and returns all 12 qualifiers making 6A the only group that had a graduate in the 106 lb weight class. 113 returns 9, but loses 3 placers, its Champion and Fifth place finisher. 120 returns 10 and only loses its Sixth place finisher. 126 returns 9 and loses Second. 132 also returns 9 but loses Third and Fifth. In all 24 of 30 placers return for this season. With so many returning placers likely stacking up, we look forward to some very tough weights in the lower weights of this division.
138 returns 8 but loses 4 placers, Champion, Second, Fourth and Sixth. 144 returns 7, but also loses 4 placers, Champion, Second, Third and Fifth. 150 returns 8 and only loses two placers, its Champion and Sixth place finisher. 157 drops to 5 returners, and loses all but its Third and Fifth place finishers. 165 returns 7 and graduates Third, Fourth and Sixth.
The upper weights see two big groups of returners for the first time, with 190 returning 9 and only losing Second from the podium. 285 also returns its biggest group at 7, but does graduate its Champion, Fourth and Fifth. 175 and 215 both still return 5, which are solid groups for these weights. 215 returns all podium finishers where as 175 loses its top 3 and Fifth.
6A remains our only group without a returning 8th grader, as 1A-4A has 2, Jonathan Benavides Qualifier at 106 and Ryker Houston, Second at 113. Six returners are entering their 9th grade year. Notable from that group are Oak Grove’s duo of Kellen Mitchell (106) and Christian Hill (113) who both finished Third.
The Sophomore class has 29 returners, and they are a strong group, with 13 placers, including 1 Champion, 4 Seconds and 3 Thirds. Haiden Hise was your Champion at 132 and is still alive to be a 4 timer. Jeremy Lambert (106), Micah Woodman (120), Drake Wood (132) and Dylan Brown (165) all came up just short and finished Second.
The Junior class has 34 qualifiers returning, but an overall low number of top finishers. The class does have 3 Champions, Thomas Patterson (106), Noah Rains (120) and undefeated David Hill (126). That made it 3 in a row for David, keeping his dream of 5 State Championships alive. After the 3 Champions, there are no Second or Third place finishers in this class.
The Senior class accounts for 39 returners. Among the 21 placers, there were 3 Champions, 3 Seconds and 5 Thirds. The Senior class is led by two time undefeated State Champion Layton Pohl (190) who is joined by Tra`mel Mccoy (165) and Nolan Addeo (215) on top of the podium. Runner-ups were Ethan Jones (150), Noah Breeland (215) and Devin Bragg (285).
Top Returning Stars
This group is headlined by a pair of undefeated multiple time State Champions, David Hill and Layton Pohl.
In addition to David Hill’s three State Championships, he is an NHSCA All-American, ranked nationally by Sports Illustrated and Flo Wrestling across several rankings. David is well on his way to joining exclusive company as a 5 time State Champion. As only a Sophomore, we are excited to see what the future holds for this standout Alabama Champion.
Layton Pohl who capped off his Junior year as a 43-0 State Champion is one of our favorite type of, and rare, wrestling Champions. Layton is a three sport standout, rushing for over a 1000 yards as a running back, topping 90 mph with his fastball and winning a State Championship all in the same year. Layton is proof to all the parents out there that your son or daughter can be a Championship wrestler while excelling at multiple sports.
Conclusion
1A-4A is an interesting group that by the numbers would indicate a little lack of depth, but also one that is in the growth phase, with a lot of young successful high level wrestlers. The numbers also show us a group that should continue to grow and improve over the next few years. 2 to 3 years from now it should look similar to the upper divisions where there is more Junior/Senior depth and graduating talent every year.
